The North Hertfordshire Liberal Democrats

We are the champions for liberal values across North Hertfordshire. Locally, we will use our position on the District and County councils to deliver meaningful and progressive change on behalf of residents. Nationally, we want to build a fairer society, but also keep the economy strong and secure. Internationally we want the UK to remain engaged in Europe, and to lead the response to global challenges like climate change. If you share our values and objectives, please give us your support. (NB. This site only covers North Herts. If you live in Stevenage, please visit www.stevenagelibdems.org.uk).

We believe it's important to communicate with local residents all year round, not just at election times. That's why our local campaigners work harder than any of the other parties to produce and deliver publications like the ones below. Conservative MPs just voted to prevent Owen Paterson from being suspended despite abusing his position.

It's clear that Boris Johnson believes that he and his colleagues shouldn't have to face the consequences of their actions. His Government has laid the groundwork for a crony committee of Conservatives to protect each other from the consequences of sleaze.

The merits of standing in a council by-election we have a chance of winning are obvious. So too for wards which we might hope to win in the future and where the by-election is a chance to accelerate that progress.

But there are also huge benefits in standing even in wards that we are not likely to win for a very long time yet (if ever).

Rivers should be safe for swimming, fishing and sustaining wildlife. They are a precious source of drinking water for some. So why are they filled with raw sewage and human waste, destroying them for decades to come?

How the Party is run, by, and on behalf of, every member is fundamental to how successful we are at delivering our liberal vision of Britain.

The 2019 General Election Review (the Thornhill Review) set out how we must change in order to succeed at future elections. Since its publication, in many areas we have made strides, but there is still much to do.

Conservative MP Philip Davies has started taking a surprising interest in the Liberal Democrats' commitment to an equal parliament, and our internal selection procedures.

Perhaps he has decided to turn his back on his sexist views, or perhaps he has a different motive.

Read Philip Davies' letter to Ed Davey, and Ed's reply:

Liberal Democrat councillors were shocked and disappointed that their proposals to strengthen the Domestic Abuse motion were blocked by the Conservatives at the Full Council meeting of Hertfordshire County Council on 19 October.

The Liberal Democrat proposals include Hertfordshire Police recording crimes which are motivated by sex or gender following the example set successfully by Nottinghamshire Police in 2016 and followed since by 10 other police forces; that the Council seeks funding from the government to support survivors and victims through the Spending Review; and that the backlog of domestic abuse court cases be addressed with urgency.

    We did it!

The Vagrancy Bill is a blunt outdated instrument that makes criminals of rough sleepers. It hurts the people most in need in our society.

Liberal Democrats have been fighting to scrap it for years. And today, the Prime Minister has been dragged kicking and screaming to a point where even he admits it needs to go.
